BOOK DESCRIPTION:

"Welcome to Extraction testing."

Clementine has spent her whole life preparing for her sixteenth birthday, when she’ll be tested for Extraction in the hopes of being sent from the planet Kiel’s toxic Surface to the much safer Core, where people live without fear or starvation. When she proves promising enough to be “Extracted,” she must leave without Logan, the boy she loves. Torn apart from her only sense of family, Clem promises to come back and save him from brutal Surface life.

What she finds initially in the Core is a utopia compared to the Surface—it’s free of hard labor, gun-wielding officials, and the moon's lethal acid. But life is anything but safe, and Clementine learns that the planet's leaders are planning to exterminate Surface dwellers—and that means Logan, too.

Trapped by the steel walls of the underground and the lies that keep her safe, Clementine must find a way to escape and rescue Logan and the rest of the planet. But the planet leaders don't want her running—they want her subdued.

With intense action scenes and a cast of unforgettable characters,Extraction is a page-turning, gripping read, sure to entertain lovers of Hunger Games and Ender's Game and leave them breathless for more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Twenty-one-year-old Stephanie Diaz wrote her debut novel, Extraction, when she should've been making short films and listening to college lectures at San Diego State University.
When she isn't lost in books, she can be found singing, marveling at the night sky, or fan-girling over TV shows.

 When did you start writing?

I've been a writer as long as I can remember, since early in elementary school. I knew I wanted to be an author in second grade.

What makes you want to write?

Writing is my escape and my sanity. I have so many crazy thoughts going around in my head all the time, and my natural way of dealing with them is to channel them into stories and characters.

Do you ever get writer's block and what do you do to get over it?

Oh, I get writer's block ALL the time. But it usually happens because I've tried to take the story in a direction that isn't the right one. I usually have to re-write the most recent scenes until I figure out the right direction, one that makes me more excited about the story.

Do you have a special way of going about writing?

I don't really have a consistent, special thing I do when I write. It's whatever works at the moment. But usually I need instrumental music playing in the background in order to get into the right head space. And if I'm having a really hard time focusing (which happens a lot), I'll drive to a random parking lot and write in my car, so I have fewer distractions (the internet is way too shiny).

What are your hobbies?

Singing, playing guitar, and watching films.

How did you choose the character names for Extraction?

Most of the names fell into my head before I even started writing, when I first began developing the story. So I don't really know where they came from! Some random minor characters were named after people I know in real life, though. :-)

Do you have any works in progress?

I'm currently drafting/revising books two and three in the Extraction trilogy. I also have a couple other projects I'm working on when I have extra time, my favorite of which is another, very different YA sci-fi.

Who is your favorite character in Extraction?

Clementine. I greatly admire her bravery. :-)

Where did you get the idea for Extraction?

It came from an image I had randomly of a giant moon looming in the sky. I started wondering what life would be like on a planet where the moon was a big, poisonous threat instead of something
beautiful.

What was your favourite part of writing Extraction?

The initial drafting process was really fun for me, and my escape from the annoyances of college life. But I also loved the revision process, when it developed into a fuller story.

What are you currently reading?

I just finished WE WERE LIARS by E. Lockhart. Fantastic book. Read it!

What is your favorite book?

I have tons, but the Harry Potter books will always be dear to me. Also THE GIVER by Lois Lowry.

Who is your favourite author?

Again, I have a number of them. But I'm gonna go with John Green.

What is your favourite film?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

What is your favourite TV show?

Currently? Parks & Recreation.

Quick-fire questions:

Chocolate or ice cream? Ice cream.
Paperback or ebook? Paperback.
Dogs or cats? Dogs!
Go out or stay in? Depends on the day. :P
