Review - Spelled by Betsy Schow

Title: Spelled
Author: Betsy Schow
Pages: 352
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Release date: 2nd June 2015

Blurb from Goodreads:

Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.

Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas." Now it's up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse...before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

My Review:

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley*

2.5/5 stars

Dorthea is the Princess of Emerald. The only things she cares about are shoes and dresses.
That's until her mother informs her that she is going to marry Prince Kato whether she wants to or not.
Angry and upset, Dorthea makes a wish which backfires. With her parents gone and a witch named Griz after her, Dorthea must find a way to reverse her wish with the help of Prince Kato, who has turned into some sort of strange creature, and a servant who likes to steal things.

Spelled was a mixed read.
It took a while for me to warm to Dorthea. She was vain and selfish to start with but I enjoyed reading as she grew into a better person. None of the other characters really stood out.
The plot was alright. I liked the mix of fairy tales but I lost attention several times.
I didn't feel the romance but I was glad that it wasn't over the top.
I was expecting to enjoy the book more so I'm slightly disappointed.

Overall this was an okay read.
