Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins

Publication Date: October 6, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books
Genre: YA, Dystopian

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Zo learns that
revenge, loyalty and love are more complicated than she ever imagined in the first installment of this two-book series.

3/5 stars

Zo is a member of the Wolf clan, one of four clans that have been at war for years. The Raven, Kodiack and Wolf clans have joined together against the Ram who are the strongest. They are also the reason that Zo’s parents are dead.
Zo volunteers for a suicide mission to enter the Ram fold and gather information for the Allies. Her plan is turned upside down when her sister follows her. Now Zo must find a way to keep Tess safe.
Things continue to go off course as Zo heals a young Ram and they become friends. She becomes entangled with a Ram soldier who doesn’t act like a Ram and finds out that the Nameless slaves are planning a rebellion.

Nameless was an intriguing read.
Zo was a likeable protagonist. She was strong and didn’t like being told what to do. I didn’t like that she went off on a mission that would probably end in death leaving her sister with the Allies but Zo does realise that what she had done was wrong.
Gryphon was a good character – he was merciful and overall just a good guy. I felt sorry for him having to live under the shadow of his father’s shame.
The plot was good and held my attention. I liked the writing style and the world that the author has created.
There was some romance but it’s subtle and quite sweet. I liked that it wasn’t over the top.
Zo is a healer and I would have liked to have found out more about how she became one – we’re told that her mother taught her but it’s not explained in detail.

Overall this was an enjoyable read.
