Serenity (Forever, #1) by India R. Adams
Publication date: July 26th 2016
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

To say I know where this story begins is to say I remember what lifetime started it all…and why. What I do know is this lifetime is hard and cruel…maybe like the rest. That is until I meet him–the light that shines and guides me. To where I don’t know but my soul chooses to follow regardless. I believe it has done this before. I believe I will follow him…forever.

A destructive home life silently tears Serenity, a 16 year old girl, apart until her broken spirit is given a gift in the form of an old journal that sends her a visitor in the night.

Away from the sun I close my eyes
and release myself into the unknown

I hope she is there

I hope she is there…

The cloaked woman teaches Serenity that the lingering feeling of missing a part of her soul, may not be a figment of her imagination and with these words Serenity’s journey, of this lifetime, begins.

The toll on my spirit had slowly broken me down—day by day, night by night, drink by drink, hit by hit—to the limp, fragile, lost girl that Dereck Hamilton . . . carried away.

From your list, I have chosen the topic, “How to make your characters believable”.

In reviews and through talking with readers on social media, I hear this the most, “Your characters seem so real! I feel like I know them!...” So I got to thinking. It may be because they are so real to me.
I was a child actor, and my training was always “Become this character. How does she feel… What does she desire… How would she react…” I didn’t just study the lines on the script and repeat them on stage. Now that’s what it is like when writing. I don’t just type… I become the character. I believe that is why I only write in first person. See, I immerse myself into to whoever is speaking in the chapter—the book. Example? My voice (in my head) even deepens when writing for a male. I change my own perspectives and outlooks… to his. Yes, that was very interesting and made writing STEAL ME a complete blast. And had me asking some questions that had my husband’s brow rising. “Are you writing such sexual details in your book?”
I shrug. “No, but I need to know why he wants it so bad. I need to know why I’m hormonally crazed and need her cookies.”
“First of all we don’t call it cookies, baby doll.”
“But I hate the C and P word.”
            Yes, he laughed at me.
So if you’re a writer and want character advice, it is, take it to the next level. Breathe what your character breathes… When my head hits the pillow, my husband says I’m out like a light. He asked how sitting for hours and writing can make me so tired. My answer? “Because I go where my character goes. Sometimes that means running in the woods. Sometimes fighting for their life. Sometimes on a tour bus, traveling the world.” When my husband gets a beautiful smile and tells me I amaze him, my eyes water because I recognize all the dreamy men I write about.
