Synopsis:

A Day in the Life of Writing The Midnight Spell

I swore I would NEVER collaborate on a book, yet I ended up doing just that with one of my BFFs on The Midnight Spell. When we conceived the idea together while I was cooking dinner one night, it soon became evident we’d have to write it together. Since it was very easy for us to set our laptops on my dining room table and carry on conversations as we wrote, I decided to put aside any of my misgivings and take the plunge.


So how did that work out? 



Our Work Space

My dining room table became our control center. My cat had fun peering at us over the back of the laptops. Sometimes we’d just brainstorm and retire to our separate workspaces. We’d usually end up chatting on Facebook or talking on Skype if we’d have to sort something out. Toward the end, we ended up at the dining room table every time we worked. It was just easier. 



Our Snack Ritual 


While writing The Midnight Spell, I made a lot of different kind of cookies using healthy ingredients. The most popular was whole wheat peanut butter cookies. I’d usually make cookies before our writing session and we’d end up snacking on them and drinking diet coke (we’re both addicted). 



What We Did For Inspiration 


During this time, we were big fans of the Secret Circle television show and Once Upon A Time. It was fun discussing the magic on the show, but in the end we ended up doing our own thing. 



How We Wrote The Book 


Kody wrote for Adam. I wrote for Christy. We’d alternate writing our sections. While he was busy on his part, I’d do research or take care of the business side of writing. When he was done, I’d read over what he wrote, we’d discuss it, and revise. Then I’d write my section while he did research and that sort of thing. We always read over each other’s scenes and discussed it in detail to make sure we didn’t drop any threads. 



How We Dealt With Conflict 


Happily, we were usually on the same page. If we found ourselves out of step with each other it usually had to do with one of us missing a plot thread or a moment of characterization.

In closing, writing is an intense endeavor, but not extremely exciting. It’s just one person sitting at their desk typing away. But collaborating definitely added a fun new dynamic. It was inspirational and creative to discuss the book as it was being written. Though I was reluctant at first, in the end it was well worth collaborating on The Midnight Spell.
